FAHM Beats: DJ Playlists Celebrating Filipino American Stories

FAHM Beats: DJ Playlists Celebrating Filipino American Stories

As a lifelong music lover, I know the power of a good playlist. There's just something about curating the perfect mix of songs that can capture an entire story, mood, or era. If you're like me and grew up recording songs off the radio, you know this passion runs deep. For Filipino American History Month, Dear Flor invited three DJs to craft playlists that not only showcase their musical influences but also tell their unique stories. Each playlist is an immersive journey through identity, heritage, and sound, reminding us of the diversity and creativity that makes the Filipino community shine.

The Three Playlists: A Journey Through Music and Identity

1. Filipino Dream Pop by Darling Chuck
Drea Baker, a.k.a. Darling Chuck, a New York City DJ and a true musical visionary, brings us "Filipino Dream Pop," a mix inspired by her California roots and her evolution as an artist. Known for shaking up the city’s nightlife and collaborating with icons like Duran Duran, Nile Rodgers, and brands like A24, Darling Chuck is a master of blending genres and setting unforgettable vibes. Her playlist, FILIPINO DREAM POP, is both chill and ethereal, with tracks from Filipino and Fil-Am artists that evoke both rest and wonder—perfect for when you need to dream big.
🎶 "I’m always rediscovering my identity. I never feel like I have to be one way. I embrace evolving and becoming someone new."

2. Bahay Natin by Jodi / MAAMSIR
Jodi Calderon, known as MAAMSIR, offers us a powerful blend of house and techno with "Bahay Natin," paying homage to the Filipino artists shaping electronic music. Growing up in a vibrant and diverse Inglewood community, Jodi found strength and purpose in her roots. Her Fil-Am identity, along with her pride as a queer Angeleno, comes through in every beat. Bahay Natin is more than just music—it's a cultural experience that breaks boundaries, creates unity, and showcases the talent of Filipino House and Techno producers.
🎶 "House music and art have been my sanctuary."

3. Dear Flor: Flowers for My Peoples by Gabe Melendres / Multiple Choice
Gabe Melendres, a.k.a. Multiple Choice, a seasoned Bay Area DJ and hip-hop lover, celebrates his Filipino heritage with "Dear Flor: Flowers for My Peoples." A second-generation Fil-Am, he’s a man of faith, family, and hip-hop culture, dedicated to honoring his roots and paying tribute to the legends who’ve inspired him. This mix flows with soul, funk, reggae, and hip-hop, echoing the sounds he grew up with and the legacy of Filipino, Black, and Asian artists who have shaped him.
🎶 "Thankful for all the contributions of Filipino Americans and people in my life."
